I didnāt start running because I loved it.
I started because my dog needed it.
Like a lot of new pet owners, I quickly realised that daily walks werenāt always enough to burn off my dogās energy. He needed moreāmore movement, more stimulation, more everything. So one day, almost on a whim, I decided to try running with him.
At the time, I wasnāt a runner. Not even close.
š Running for Him⦠Not Me
In the beginning, it was purely practical.
Running felt like the fastest way to tire him out and make sure he was getting proper exercise.
Those first few runs? Not glamorous.
- I got out of breath quickly
- My legs felt heavy
- I constantly questioned why I thought this was a good idea
Meanwhile, my dog was having the time of his lifeātail wagging, full of energy, ready to keep going long after I was done.
š Something Unexpected Happened
Somewhere along the way, things started to shift.
What began as a chore slowly turned into something I didnāt mind⦠and then something I actually started to enjoy.
It wasnāt about speed or distance. It was:
- Being outside
- Having a routine
- Sharing that time with my dog
Running stopped feeling like his activity and started becoming ours.
š¾ The Bond That Made It Stick
Thereās something different about running with a dog.
Youāre not just exercisingāyouāre doing it together. Thereās no pressure, no performance, no expectations. Just movement and companionship.
On days when I didnāt feel like going, he was ready.
And somehow, that was enough to get me out the door.
Consistency came naturallyānot because I was disciplined, but because he needed me to show up.
š± From Obligation to Habit
Without really noticing, running became part of my routine.
I wasnāt forcing it anymore.
I wasnāt dreading it.
I just⦠did it.
And over time:
- It felt easier
- I could go longer
- I actually looked forward to it
What started as āI should take the dog for a runā turned into āletās go for a run.ā
šÆ Where I Am Now
I still wouldnāt have called myself a runner at the start.
But now? Itās just something I do.
And it all came from a simple decision to give my dog the exercise he needed.
Turns out, I needed it too.
š¶ Final Thought
Sometimes the best habits donāt start with big goals or motivation.
Sometimes they start with something smallālike a dog that just needs a bit more exercise.
And before you know it, youāve changed your routine⦠and maybe even a part of your life.
